Bruises

Bruises are not only skin deep,

But can sink, slither through

The crevices of our being

And down into our soul,

Darkening ourselves over time

Until the light inside us all

Shuts off, as if someone flipped

The switch.

And we wait in darkness,

waiting for someone to find our

Light switch, and flip it back,

Before we learn to adapt, and live

In the darkness that overtook us.
