Hunger Pains

As his stomach growled and
Fingers froze, everyday he
Was there, asking for help,
From people that pretended
He wasn’t there,
Who would rather not believe
He existed in the same world
As them.

His metal bowl set down
Next to where he lay,
Wrapped in his long coat
And inefficient boots,
With that voice chewing at him,
Asking why.

Why face the humiliation,
In world where he is forgotten,
Just wants a burger and some fries,
But is limited to scouring garbage cans
For scraps of people who would rather
Throw it away
Than give it away
To the man whose stomach growls
